CUSSETA, Ga. (AP) - Mel
Gibson was scouting possible locations for a proposed film about
Vietnam in this west Georgia town bordering Fort Benning Thursday.
Surrounded by admiring waitresses at the Four Winds restaurant, he
pointed toward retired Lt. Gen. Hal Moore and whispered: ``He's
the real hero.''
Moore, co-author of the best
seller ``We
Were Soldiers Once ... and Young,'' smiled when he heard
Gibson's remark, then said Gibson could play him in a movie based
on the 1992 book.
``I had always thought that John
Wayne would have been the ideal choice. But Mel will do.''
Moore, who lives in Auburn,
Ala., was a commander with the 11th Air Assault Division in the
1965 battle of Ia Drang Valley, the American forces' first major
confrontation with North Vietnamese Army regulars.
