As for the "all wet" go to "straightdope.com" Cecil Adams reports the facts. John Wayne had his 2-A revoked by the draft board and was reclassifed 1-A. He used the pull of Hollywood to get back to a 2-A status. His career was stable and he had no excuse except wanting his family to enjoy the good life as the family of a actor. Jimmy Steward, Clark Gable and other actors actively served. John Wayne being portrayed as a REAL hero is insulting to those of us who served (3ACR). It’s like the people who think Sylvester Stalone is a real soldier and Chuck Norris was a fake soldier. It’s Hollywood guys. Wayne went for the money not the duty.

Hmm, my father actually served in WW2. He was on the second wave on Omaha Beach. Now why didn’t John Wayne serve his country? Hmm.. As far as I am concerned, it is people like my Dad that were the heroes, and people like John Wayne nothing more than "war wimps." Of course, I guess making all those war movies was pretty dangerous for John Wayne!!! God, the man was such a joke.

Hi Kevin,

I did read all the entries, on why "I'm all wet" concerning Waynes 'Draft Dodger status". My dad was about the same age as Wayne, 2 children, 1 rib and 1/2 a lung missing (from a minor league baseball career fast ball injury)and he enlisted as soon as the war started. He served 2 years in the South Pacific. They didn't take him right away due to his age.

All my uncles served with honor, some relatives died, others came home and resumed their lives without whining. I joined the Army 101st Airborne at 17 yrs old and earned the wings that Wayne fraudulently wore in green berets.

Ronald Reagan enlisted and (made movies), Lee Marvin was a combat marine, Clark Gable served etc. Face it: Waynes career was more important than his country.

Another 'brilliant comment' was :
'What difference did it make if one more man served', Using that logic- 'What difference did it make if anyone served'. We'd all be speaking German or Japanese now and I'm sure Wayne would have made the transition with little effort.

He wrapped himself in the Flag and like many of the forum writers was quick to label anyone they disagree with "A Commie". I'm guessing a lot of them learned the "Draft Dodger Rag" from wayne. They seem more concerned with expounding weak "He couldn't because......blah, blah blah excuses"; their "Don't mess with my hero" routine than with truth.

Sinatra, Van Johnson, Robert Mitchum et. al., may have been Dodgers too but they weren't playing the hero role to the degree Wayne was. I guess when you don't have the balls you've got to use bluster and at that Wayne deserved an Academy Award.
